Aztec print

Aztec prints are making a bold comeback. These Mexican-inspired prints are at once tribal, colourful, eye-catching and no doubt full of energy. And since it’s a pivotal year in the ancient Mayan Calendar, these popping prints could never have come at a better time.

Over the last few months, outrageous Aztec prints have become somewhat of a cult phenomenon amongst celebs and fashion lovers around the world. But these eclectic patterns needn’t mean ponchos or granny-style rustic designs. In fact, Aztec prints are now beautifully teamed with the latest colours, styles and designs perfect for the upcoming summer.

In ancient Tenochtitlan, dating back to the 14th century, colours and daring designs were at the heart of the Aztec fashion. Chunky gold chokers, elaborate necklaces and weighty bangles were a sign of wealth amongst the general populace. Clothing was vibrant, rich in texture and made a definite statement. Feathers, embroidery, wool and woven fabrics in multiple hues were worn by both young and old.

But before you dust off your dream catcher, your collection of semi-precious stones and pull out your pet llama, let’s learn more about how to wear these spirited prints without messing up.

Tips for Wearing Aztec Prints

• Aztecs work beautifully with denims or with solid, monochromatic colours.
• Wear a pastel-coloured garment together with an Aztec one for a feminine and interesting combination.
• Combine with feather-drop earrings or leather bracelets in bright colours like the ones from South African fashion brand, Joy Jewellery.
• Aztec prints look great with textured materials so team prints with items like suede half boots and leather cross body sling bags for a sense of depth and for a layered look.
• Pair prints with sequins – yes it sounds a little outrageous but if you’re planning on hitting the town with your girls, Aztec prints combined with sequins and beads can look absolutely gorgeous. See the image below for inspiration.

• Wear one piece of clothing with a black and white Aztec print and then add a splash of colour by adding a very bright garment or even perhaps a neon piece.
• Bring out your washed denim shirts and denim jackets and wear these together with an Aztec print.
• Experiment with other textures – wear a bold chiffon blouse in a single colour with Aztec shorts or an Aztec mini skirt.
• Don’t be afraid to wear crazy heels in bright colours. Experiment with bold colours in different designs. Even try espadrilles for a true tribal appearance.
