SKULL FASHION TREND 2013

How-To | Posted by on Jan. 23, 2013, 2:21 p.m.

Towards the end of last year (right about the time of Halloween), the skull fashion trend once again made a huge comeback. However, we haven’t seen the last of this in-your-face fashion trend. In fact, many are still wearing items bearing skulls and it’s nearly the end of January! So this edgy fashion trend is definitely here to stay and will most likely continue until the winter season.

Skulls can be worn in a variety of ways, from a totally Goth look to a classic outfit with the slightest touch of grunge. You needn’t be limited to a certain look or style and it all depends on what the occasion is, of course.

The History of Skulls in Fashion

Skulls have a rich cultural history and have been used to guard and protect the dead within tombs, catacombs and many ancient sites around the world. More recently, however, the mass media, singers, artists and fashion designers alike have popularized skeletons, skulls and crossbones.

This motif of death has made its way into the fashion world and it has become somewhat of an obsession with movie stars and rock bands. Death has therefore prominently influenced couture - take for example rock and roll stars including the likes of the Rolling Stones band members who have thrived on a somewhat outrageous fashion statement for many years. Even the recent Pirates of the Caribbean movies have once again brought about a fascination with skull and crossbones symbols used by pirates – these symbols are no doubt ones of rebellion, spontaneity and they convey a certain wildness. They also importantly recognize the brevity of life and they make the ‘carpe diem’ phrase somewhat more tangible and in your face.

Here’s how you can re-create this urban edge appearance in a few different ways:

How to Wear Skulls

1.    Classic Skull Style

Wear a main item bearing skull patterns, together with a monochromatic item. For example, rock a black and white skull print tee with plain black jeans and a sophisticated white blazer.

2.    Bling It Up

Go big on skull accessories and downplay your outfit. Choose a very basic outfit (plain black and white items) and then give your skull accessories centre stage! Rock a skull handbag, a bracelet and tiny silver skull earrings for a definite bling bling ensemble.

3.    Go for Grunge!

Wear a bright skull tee, biker jacket and skinnies. Obtain maximum skull-appeal by adding the necessary chunky skull accessories.

4.    Indie Skull Look

If you’re like us and love the indie look then why not wear a cutout skull top, high-waisted shorts and a simple skull bracelet to complete the look? Alternatively, wear a long flowing print dress, leather boots and add a bold skull ring for a feminine, on-trend indie appearance.

When it comes to indie style, make your outfit unique, mix and match items and find out what works best for you.
